DISABILITY STUDIES:: NCPWD RECEIVES WESLEY UNIVERSITY INTO AWARD OF FULL DEGREE PROGRAMS

To further expand the coverage of Universities that will be awarding full degree programs in disability studies, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons With Disabilities, Dr. James David Lalu has recently in his office received in audience the Management team of Wesley University Ondo, Ondo State.

Addressing the meeting, the ES elucidated the monumental records of disability inclusivity at the institution for decades which has also earned it a strong partnership with Gallaudet University Washington DC.

He, however, hinted that the world has moved from the traditional Disciplines towards Vocational studies in order to acquire sills that will be more impactful in our daily lives.

Lalu further disclosed that the Commission has established very enterprising partnerships with some Universities in Nigeria.

According to him, the National University Commission has provided the appropriate approval for the establishment of Disability studies in five Nigerian Universities already.

“The Universities will be having Rehabilitation Management, Assistive Technology, Disability inclusive development and Accessibility development as part of their curriculum”, he reiterated.

The Commission helmsman relished Wesley University as an ancient Institution with so much potential which the Commission is keen to identify with.

In a quick reaction, the Vice Chancellor, Wesley University, Rt. Rev. Professor Obeka Samuel Sunday expressed his gratitude to the ES for his dedication to the fundamental existence of Persons With Disabilities.

He further disclosed that Wesley University has attracted the interest of the Ondo community leading to the donation of 250 hectares of land to the school for infrastructural development.

The Academia equally underpinned that collaboration with the Commission is much anticipated for greater impact in the disability community.

The Vice Chancellor informed that Wesley University is the only citadel of learning that offers full scale degree programs in Theology and has developed a sign language dictionary in many Nigerian languages to ease communication with the Deaf.
