Argentina and former Barcelona legend Lionel Messi has confirmed his switch to American side Inter Miami after using the exit door from French champions Paris Saint Germain. The Argentine opted to make the switch to America despite the lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, coupled with the cobwebs surrounding his return to his former club Barcelona, and the limitations of Financial Fair Play (FFP).
The ex-Barcelona forward was bent on a return to the Spain this summer but the FFP limitations that will be in place for next season in La Liga has dashed such ambitious plan from materializing. The 35 year old star while speaking on this new development says: “I really wanted, I was very excited to be able to return [to Barcelona], but after having experienced what I experienced and the exit I had, I did not want to be in the same situation again – waiting to see what was going to happen. “I heard that they had to sell players or reduce players’ salaries and the truth is that I didn’t want to go through that, nor take charge of obtaining
something that had to do with all that.”
In a statement released by Barcelona President Joan Laporta after meeting with the father of Messi Jorge Messi, he says he understands and respects Messi’s decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands, further away from the spotlight and the pressure he has been subject to in recent years,”
As of now, Messi has not completely rule out a move to the City of Barcelona someday.
