NSC DG STORMS SCHOOLS, REWARDS TEEN SWIM SENSATIONS WITH MILLIONS

Nigeria’s next generation of sports champions is getting national recognition right from their classrooms.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has begun an appreciation tour of secondary schools, rewarding exceptional young athletes and reinforcing the Commission’s renewed focus on grassroots sports development.

It was a proud moment at Grange School in Lagos as the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, paid a special visit to celebrate two of Nigeria’s brightest young swimming stars.

The visit marks the launch of a new strategy by the National Sports Commission aimed at identifying and rewarding talents early, promoting integrity in age-grade competitions, and reshaping youth sports development in the country.

The recognition follows Team Nigeria’s dominant outing at the 2025 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championship, where the country shattered multiple continental records and unveiled a new wave of elite youth athletes.

Fourteen-year-old Aidan Dumuije-Abili emerged the star of the tournament, setting five new Africa Zone 2 records and clinching six gold medals, one silver and one bronze. He was named the Most Valuable Junior Athlete of the championship.

Tofunmi Ibidapo also delivered an impressive performance, winning gold, silver and bronze medals in both individual and relay events to reinforce Nigeria’s dominance in the pool.

Speaking during the presentation, Olopade said the initiative mirrors the leadership example of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing that excellence deserves national appreciation.

He noted that the successes recorded at grassroots level have strengthened confidence in Nigeria’s prospects ahead of the 2028 Olympic cycle and upcoming international competitions.

In recognition of their outstanding achievements, the NSC DG presented Aidan with a three-million-naira cash award, while Tofunmi received two million naira.

Olopade reaffirmed that grassroots sports development remains a top priority for the Commission, stressing that early encouragement would inspire millions of young Nigerians to see sport as a pathway to growth and national pride.

The appreciation tour is expected to continue in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as more exceptional young athletes come under the national spotlight.
