In a show of high-level solidarity ahead of the 3rd CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championship, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, on Monday led a Confederation of African Athletics delegation on a courtesy visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta.
The meeting, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, comes just days before the continent’s top young athletes converge on the Ogun State capital for the championship, scheduled from July 16 to 20.
The former president expressed gratitude to the CAA for choosing Nigeria and Ogun State in particular as host, assuring the delegation of his full cooperation.
President of the Confederation of African Athletics, Hamad Malboum, emphasized the need for structural reforms in African sports, calling for sustainable solutions driven from within the continent.
He also unveiled a new initiative the Africa Sports and Culture Development Foundation and sought Chief Obasanjo’s consent to chair its Board of Trustees.
President Malboum formally presented a letter of cooperation and a special book to the former president, marking a symbolic commitment to collaboration.
Other members of the visiting delegation included President of Asian Athletics General Dahlan Al Hamad, and President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Chief Tonobok Okowa.
With Abeokuta now in the spotlight, the stage is set not only for athletic excellence but also for African unity through sport.
