The Federal Government is stepping up efforts to tackle food and nutritional insecurity in the country. In a renewed push under the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is teaming up with a key regional body to promote sustainable and resilient food systems.
In a strategic move to enhance food and nutrition safety across Nigeria, the Federal Government is deepening ties with the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel, known as CILSS.
During a courtesy visit by a delegation from CILSS, led by its Executive Secretary Abdoulaye Mahamadou, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, announced that the collaboration will focus on transforming agriculture, modernizing farming systems, and securing the nation’s food supply.
He highlighted key initiatives underway, including the promotion of biofortified crops like zinc-enriched rice and the adoption of mechanized farming techniques to increase productivity.
The Minister emphasized that the Federal Ministry is aligning its plans with the broader Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure food is not only available but affordable and accessible to all Nigerians.
Also speaking, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, said the government is assessing preparedness to tackle future food and nutrition crises as part of efforts to attain food sovereignty.
In his remarks, CILSS Executive Secretary, Abdoulaye Mahamadou, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to strengthening food systems and promoting affordable, nutritious diets across the Sahel and West Africa.
The meeting also had in attendance key Directors from the Ministry, signaling a high-level commitment to achieving food security through strategic partnerships.
