KANO NORTHERN BYPASS TO DECONGEST CITY ROADS, BOOST ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES, ENHANCE ROAD SAFETY

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering critical road infrastructure across the country with the ongoing construction of the Kano Northern Bypass, a strategic project aimed at decongesting Kano metropolis, enhancing road safety, and improving regional connectivity in the North-West Zone.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the project, the Engineering Representative, Engr. Abba Sani Bello, disclosed that the Kano Northern Bypass is a dual-carriageway spanning approximately 37.8 kilometres.

The project features ten major bridges, reinforced concrete shoulders, and a three-metre-wide concrete median designed to ensure durability and an extended service life.

According to him, the road alignment begins from Danzaki on the Kano–Hadejia Road and terminates on the Kano–Katsina Road, about nine kilometres away from Kano metropolis on both ends.

He explained that the bypass will enable motorists especially heavy-duty vehicles travelling between the North-East and North-West to bypass Kano city entirely, significantly reducing traffic congestion, travel time, and logistics costs.

Engr. Bello revealed that the project has achieved approximately 6.8 per cent completion, with notable progress recorded in site clearance, topsoil removal, earthworks, pavement layers, and structural works.

He added that about 5.9 kilometres of pavement wearing course has been completed on both carriageways, alongside reinforced concrete shoulders and medians.

Piling and pier works, he said, have commenced at several bridge locations, while compensation matters affecting parts of the alignment are being addressed, with no major relocation challenges.

In his remarks, the Federal Controller of Works, Kano State, Engr. Abdulsalam Dayyabu, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work, noting that construction is being carried out strictly in accordance with approved engineering standards and specifications.

He commended the Honourable Minister of Works and the media team for the inspection visit.

Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, North-West, region Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, described the Kano Northern Bypass as a critical national asset under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Yakasai commended CCECC, Nigeria Limited for deploying modern equipment and maintaining high construction standards.

He noted that professional bodies such as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, members of the media, and Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, were present to independently assess the quality and pace of work.

He disclosed that of the 260 Emergency Road Projects being executed nationwide by the Federal Government, 48 are located in the North-West Zone, underscoring the administration’s strong commitment to the region.

He further highlighted the use of concrete shoulders and medians, as well as planned solar-powered street lighting, which will enhance safety and extend the lifespan of the road to over 50 years.

The team also inspected outstanding sections of the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Expressway, Kano End, where a supervising engineer, Engr. Muhammed Kudu, confirmed that asphalt overlay, shoulder reconstruction, stone-base laying, lane markings, and street-light installations are ongoing across multiple sections.

In addition, five completed Emergency/Special Intervention Projects were commissioned across Kano State.

These include the reconstruction of Magajin Rumfa Road in Nasarawa G.R.A, Kano City repairs of flood-damaged culverts and failed sections along Kwanar Garko–Garko–Kibiya Road; remediation of flood-affected hydraulic structures along Wudil–Darki Road; and the construction of roads at the Economic City, Bichi, Phases I and II.

The commissioning was performed by the SSA-P, a Deputy Director from the Kano State Ministry of Works, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Kano State.

Representatives of host communities, including Shehu Fada Garko and Tijani Buhari, expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, describing the projects as critical to road safety, commerce, and community development.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its resolve to ensure the timely completion of all projects in line with approved quality standards and timelines for the benefit of Kano State and the nation at large.
