The Nigerian Army has reinforced Nigeria’s regional security leadership with a successful deployment of troops to the Republic of Benin to support peace and stability during the country’s electoral process.
Acting on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Army deployed a company of troops to Benin in April 2026 under Operation ATILEHIN ALAFIYA II to prevent any breakdown of law and order before, during and after the elections.

Though not directly involved in election duties, the troops maintained a strong security presence across key locations in Cotonou and surrounding areas to deter threats and boost public confidence in the democratic process.
The operation climaxed with the successful security coverage of the inauguration ceremony of President Romuald Wadagni.
Nigerian troops were deployed to strategic points, including the inauguration venue and other sensitive locations, where they carried out patrols, area domination operations and surveillance activities to ensure a peaceful event.
The Army says the mission highlights its rapid deployment capability, operational professionalism and commitment to regional peace and democratic stability within the ECOWAS sub-region.

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops for their discipline, resilience and professionalism throughout the operation.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
