FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ACTIVATES NIGERIA REVENUE SERVICE, USHERS IN NEW ERA OF REVENUE ADMINISTRATION

Nigeria’s revenue administration  enters a decisive new phase as the Federal Government officially launches the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) on Thursday, January 1, 2026, marking a full transition from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to a unified federal revenue authority.
The activation of the NRS follows the provisions of the newly enacted tax law and represents a major institutional reform aimed at strengthening revenue mobilisation, improving fiscal governance, and supporting sustainable national development.
In a statement signed by the Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media to the Executive Chairman, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi reveals that, the Nigeria Revenue Service is not a mere rebranding of the former system. It is a structural transformation designed to modernise how federal revenues are assessed, collected, managed, and reported.
 Through integrated systems and
streamlined processes, the NRS is positioned to enhance government planning, optimise public investment, and build a more resilient national economy.
This reform reflects the Federal Government’s long-term commitment to a technology-driven, efficient, and transparent revenue framework aligned with Nigeria’s economic and fiscal strategy.
Despite the institutional transition, the core mandate remains unchanged: mobilising federal revenues to fund national development. The Service continues to operate on the principles of professionalism, integrity, fairness, and service to the nation. Staff across all offices and regions of the Federation remain central to the success of the new system.
The statement explained that, “What distinguishes the NRS is a stronger delivery framework built on accountability and transparency. The Service introduces harmonised structures that simplify compliance, improve service delivery, and provide clearer engagement pathways for citizens and businesses.
“As Nigeria’s unified federal revenue authority, the NRS offers taxpayers a more coherent and accessible system for understanding obligations and complying with the law. Its operations are anchored on fair enforcement, transparent processes, and accountable administration—without favour or fear.
By embracing innovation and modern administrative practices, the Nigeria Revenue Service is strategically positioned to support long-term economic growth while strengthening trust between government and taxpayers”.
The Nigeria Revenue Service reaffirms its commitment to effective service delivery and responsible revenue administration in support of sustainable national development.
