ACCURATE MEASUREMENT  IS KEY TO INDUSTRIAL GROWTH – SON DG.

The Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Ifeanyi Okeke, says  measurement is critical as it affects energy efficiency in industries, resource management in agriculture and forestry, and adherence to environmental regulations.
Okeke Speaking on World Metrology Day, observed annually on May 20th, he said this year’s theme, ‘We Measure Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow,’ brought to the fore the critical role of measurement in promoting a sustainable global economy and environment.
He  underscored the pivotal role of accurate measurement in fostering industrial and economic development.
pointing  out that metrology impacts all facets of society, enhancing quality of life and environmental protection.
The SON boss outlined several benefits of accurate measurements, including: promoting fair and transparent trade, which can boost economic conditions and reduce poverty; ensuring reliable test and calibration results to enhance health and well-being, developing systems to guarantee access to affordable and clean energy; and driving industrial innovation and growth.
He therefore urged stakeholders to uphold their responsibility to protect the environment and maintain the effective calibration of measuring equipment, which is essential for economic development.
The SON DG however  commended the contributions of individuals advancing metrology globally.
The  World Metrology Day commemorates the signing of the Metre Convention in Paris in 1875, which established an international framework for uniform measurements.
The day honours the science of measurement—metrology—which is foundational to technological and scientific advancement.
