NIGERIA SET TO PARTICIPATE IN INAUGURAL AFRICAN SCHOOL GAMES IN ALGERIA.

Nigeria is gearing up to participate in the first-ever African School Games, a continental youth sports event scheduled to hold in Algeria from July 26 to August 5, 2025.

The National Sports Commission says the event marks a major step forward for grassroots sports development across Africa

In what is described as a milestone for African youth sports, Nigeria has confirmed its participation in the maiden edition of the African School Games taking place later this month in Algeria.

The competition is being organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), and will bring together young athletes from across the continent to compete in 10 different sporting disciplines.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, says Nigeria’s presence at the championship is a bold statement of its commitment to nurturing young sporting talents..

Team Nigeria will be competing in athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, canoeing, football, swimming, table tennis, cycling, and taekwondo.

Arrival of participants, including team heads and officials, is scheduled for July 23, ahead of the opening of the Games Village.

Olopade also emphasized that Nigeria’s involvement aligns with the country’s renewed hope agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He noted that since the current NSC leadership came on board, 21 national sports federations have already featured in international competitions outside the country..

In line with event regulations, all athletes must present valid school certificates, and minors will require parental consent facilitated by the NSC and the Nigeria Olympic Committee.

The African School Games is the first event of its kind focused solely on school children from African nations. It aims to promote Olympic values and serve as a platform for talent discovery and youth integration across the continent.

The National Sports Commission says it remains fully committed to empowering Nigerian youth through sports and maximizing international exposure to inspire the next generation of champions.
