DICAN LEADS GLOBAL DIALOGUE ON SECURITY AND Diplomacy IN ABUJA.

‎The Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN) on Tuesday hosted its maiden Diplomatic/Security International Conference at the Rotunda Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, drawing global attention to the critical need for collaboration on international security and information integrity.

‎The high-level gathering, attended by ambassadors, policymakers, media leaders, and strategic stakeholders, was themed around combatting global security challenges in an era of misinformation, disinformation, and misperceptions.

‎Speaking at the event, the Chairman of DICAN  Fredrick Idehai highlighted the vision behind the conference, describing it as a bold initiative aimed at promoting global peace, security, and development through informed and responsible diplomatic journalism.

‎”Today’s gathering is not just historic for Nigeria, but for the entire journalism and diplomatic community worldwide,” the Chairman said. “DICAN has become the first journalist beat association globally to bring together stakeholders from across the world to address the rising tide of insecurity and media-induced distortions.”

‎The event, held under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aligns with Nigeria’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Strategy Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora Engagement championed by Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

The Chairman acknowledged the unwavering support of the Ministry, the Permanent Secretary, and other institutional stakeholders who endorsed the vision and made the event possible. He emphasized that the planning process was arduous, but driven by sheer belief in the importance of the cause.

‎One of the highlights of the conference was the presentation of Merit-Based Excellence Awards to distinguished individuals and institutions who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to global peace, security, and cooperation.

‎“These awards are not for decoration,” the Chairman asserted. “They are a call to action for individuals and institutions to redouble their efforts in promoting security, development, and responsible global partnerships.”

‎He further invited stakeholders to DICAN’s upcoming Diplomatic/Trade, Investment, Business Networking Conference & Exhibition scheduled for
‎ October 28–29, 2025, aimed at strengthening international business tie.. and showcasing investment and tourism opportunities.

‎The conference underscored the association’s commitment to setting national and global agendas through responsible journalism. DICAN also called on embassies and international partners to open their doors to greater collaboration through training, information sharing, and joint programming.

‎“We are open to enhanced partnerships with your missions, especially in the areas of information exchange, training, and mutual cooperation,” the Chairman said.

‎The conference concluded with a minute of silence in honor of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari and other global citizens who have lost their lives to insecurity.

‎With this landmark event, DICAN has positioned itself not just as a watchdog of diplomacy but also as a vanguard for constructive global engagement proving that journalism, when used responsibly, can shape policy, strengthen peace, and build lasting international bridges.
