Cross-border motor insurance in West Africa is facing growing pressure as trust in the system is tested.
NAICOM’s CEO, Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, has warned that inefficiencies—especially delays in claims settlement—are eroding public confidence.
Speaking at the ECOWAS Brown Card Scheme meeting in Lagos, he made it clear that urgent reforms are needed to keep the system relevant.
The meeting brought together regulators, National Bureaux leaders, and key industry players from across the region.
At the center of discussions was the Brown Card Scheme, which enables motorists to travel across borders with insurance coverage.
Omosehin described the Scheme as essential for regional integration, supporting both mobility and protection on West African roads.
Nigeria is pushing reforms through the Insurance Industry Reform Act, 2025 to strengthen oversight and improve compliance.
However, the key issue remains clear: without fast and fair claims settlement across member states, the Scheme risks losing credibility and weakening regional cooperation.
