The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft with a sweeping multi-domain offensive under Operation Delta Sentinel, targeting illegal refining networks and oil theft syndicates across the Niger Delta.
Leading the charge, NNS Pathfinder executed intelligence-driven operations in Rivers State, uncovering a major illegal refining hub in Umoku, Ndoni. The site contained extensive makeshift infrastructure, including dugout pits and local refining ovens used to process stolen crude.
Security forces recovered about 708,000 litres of illegally refined products and 310,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil at the location. The total value of the seizure exceeded ₦1.3 billion, dealing a significant blow to illicit operators, who fled upon the arrival of naval personnel.
In a separate operation, the Forward Operating Base Bonny, supported by air assets, uncovered multiple illegal storage facilities in Bonny Local Government Area. The operation led to the recovery of approximately 231,000 litres of crude oil hidden in dugout pits and connected to improvised distribution channels.
These latest actions build on earlier gains recorded between January and March 2026, during which hundreds of thousands of litres of stolen crude and refined products were seized, alongside the dismantling of several illegal refining sites across the region.
The Navy also expanded its operations offshore, intercepting three vessels—MT MKPODU, MT WESTAF, and MT STELIOS K—carrying over 900 metric tonnes of suspected stolen crude oil, equivalent to more than one million litres.
The combined inland and maritime operations highlight a coordinated strategy aimed at dismantling the full crude oil theft value chain, from illegal refining camps to transportation and export routes.
In response to the operational successes, the Chief of Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, approved a 90-day extension of Operation Delta Sentinel to sustain momentum and intensify pressure on criminal networks.
The extension underscores a renewed commitment by the Navy to eliminate economic sabotage and protect Nigeria’s oil infrastructure, which remains critical to national revenue.
With continued intelligence-led operations and coordinated enforcement, the Navy is positioning itself to further disrupt illegal oil activities and secure the country’s energy assets.
