CDS CLARIFIES SELF-PROTECTION REMARK, SAYS NO CALL TO BEAR ARMS.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports suggesting that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, called on Nigerians to bear arms.

In a statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ explained that the CDS’ comments during a Channels Television interview on August 20, 2025, were misrepresented.

According to the DHQ, General Musa only encouraged citizens to acquire basic survival and self-protection skills—comparable to everyday life skills such as swimming, driving, taekwondo, judo, and boxing.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the CDS did not call for citizens to bear arms or engage in unlawful possession of firearms. He is fully aware of Nigerian laws prohibiting unauthorized carrying of weapons. His message was aimed at promoting resilience, situational awareness and lawful preparedness,” the statement clarified.

The military further assured Nigerians of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that the Armed Forces, alongside other security agencies, continue to record significant progress in tackling insecurity nationwide.

The DHQ also urged the public to rely on verified sources when interpreting public statements and to avoid circulating misleading reports.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to the safety and well-being of all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
