NIGERIAN NAVAL OFFICER, CAPT. AKANO, EMERGES BEST AT SOUTH AFRICAN DEFENCE COLLEGE

In another proud moment for Nigeria’s armed forces, a Nigerian Naval officer, Captain, Abidemi Oluseyi Akano, has emerged as the overall best graduating student of the Security and Defence Studies Programme 11/25 at the prestigious South African National Defence College.

Information obtained from the official Facebook page of the South African National Defence shows that Capt. Oluseyi Akano received the top honour at the graduation ceremony held on November 12, 2025, beating counterparts from several countries.

Capt. Akano’s outstanding performance places him in the ranks of exceptional Nigerian officers who have made their mark globally. Notably, he is the second non–South African to achieve this feat since the programme’s inception—the first being another Nigerian, Capt. (NN) Obute, who won the same award in 2022.

The achievement, according to observers, highlights the growing reputation of Nigeria’s military institutions and the exceptional quality of their officers in international military education and training.
